Occupational Licenses for DWI
A DWI conviction in Tennessee results in an automatic license suspension. Those convicted of a first or second DWI can generally apply for an occupational license.
- First offense DWI — A first-time DWI results in a one-year license suspension. An individual convicted of DWI can apply for an occupational license that would allow him or her to drive to work, or school if he or she is full-time student.
- Second offense DWI — A second DWI results in a two-year license suspension. A driver can apply for an occupational license after the first year of the license suspension.
People are generally not eligible for restricted licenses if:
- They have three or more DWI convictions
- Their DWI resulted in death or serious bodily injury to another person
- They are or have ever been convicted of vehicular assault due to intoxication, aggravated vehicular homicide, or a similar offense
